Eating Well on a Budget

Eating Well on a Budget

It can often be difficult to afford healthy food, especially if you are on a fixed income. Below are some tips and resources to help stretch your budget:

Seasonality

Maximize your vouchers by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season – choose frozen when out of season. Click here to see when fruits and vegetables are in season.

Price

Focus on economical fruits and vegetables like bananas, oranges, cabbage, sweet potatoes, dark-green leafy vegetables, and green peppers.

Additional Food Benefits

Apply for CalFresh to receive additional benefits – SSI recipients are now eligible for CalFresh. When you use your EBT card at participating farmers’ markets, you can also double your fruit and vegetable purchases up to a certain amount. Click here to find out more about how to apply.

Senior Discounts

Look for senior discounts and other on sale items to pair with your fresh fruits and vegetables.
